As part of the Mobile4D master’s project, we had the opportunity to travel to Bangkok and take part in the Network of Excellence in Advanced Information Technology for Tropical Medicine. The event aims to improve medicine in tropical climates with the help of information and communication technologies.

Workshop

The primary focus of our stay was a workshop lasting several days, during which various research projects were presented. The topics ranged from analyzing the role of the microclimate in predicting malaria outbreaks to monitoring enteroviruses in schools. The presentations were each accompanied by intensive discussion rounds, which facilitated an exciting professional exchange.

Summer School

The workshop was followed by an interdisciplinary summer school under the motto “Where IT meets Public Health”. The event featured various presentations on applications and the potential of digital technologies in the field of public health. Among others, Prof. Thomas Barkowsky presented modern web and mobile apps and Prof. Dr. Peter Haddawy a program that teaches machine learning interactively and visually.

Biophics und die Mahidol University

In addition to the workshop and the summer school, another important part of our stay was the visit to Biophics and the renowned Mahidol University. There we talked about current and planned projects, discussed new features and technical challenges and reviewed the results of test studies.

Kultur und Sightseeing

In addition to the scientific program, we also had time to get to know Bangkok and Thai culture. The diversity was particularly impressive – from traditional street food stalls and markets to fascinating temples and a national park.
